Heat Exchangers & Finned Tube

Finned tubes are flat carbon steel tubes that have been brazed and coated with aluminium fins. These tubes are part of a heat exchanger network. Because the fins make more contact with the liquid outside, they have an advantage over standard tubes. Heat transfer from inside to outside the tube is thus accelerated. Heat exchange would be much slower in a normal tube.

Finned tubes are particularly beneficial in air heat exchangers. Heat is transferred between a liquid and a gas in an air heat exchanger. A finned tube can be extremely useful because the heat coefficient of the airside is lower. A finned tube's increased surface area allows for faster heat transfer.
